About Purified
Linseed Oil

What is it and why is it so important?

Purified, degummed, cleaned linseed oil is the all-important building block for traditional finishes and time tested wood surface preservation.

Purified Linseed Oil does not propagate mold and mildew. It can be stored indefinitely, is the binder in Linseed Oil Paint, and the base for Linseed Oil Putty.

Raw Linseed Oil

Traditionally sun heated with a very small molecular structure for ideal absorption and penetration. It can have a longer dry time.

Boiled Linseed Oil

Heated at a higher temperature and for longer to create a larger molecular structure. The base for Linseed Oil Paint. Heating contributes to a faster dry time.

For thousands of years, Scandinavians have relied on the unique properties of linseed oil. Not only for their homes and outbuildings, but for their sailing ships and other marine applications. Linseed oil soaks into a porous wood surface, penetrating deep into the substrate in order to effectively protect against moisture, rot, and deterioration.

What we mean when we say “purified” linseed oil is that the flax oil, from the flax plant, has undergone some processing to naturally remove the food value or protein before it is ready to be used for architectural applications. This process can be referred to as purification, degumming, cleaning, etc. of the oil.

If this step is not done, a high-quality linseed oil cannot be achieved. Most conventional, hardware store linseed oil brands include additives like driers, solvents, fungicides, etc. to offset the poor quality of the oil. These options can have issues drying, can attract bugs, propagate mold and mildew, and can go rancid over time.

The extra time, labor, and cost is worthwhile when it comes to a good linseed oil.

This is an example of the penetration power of Purified Linseed Oil. It absorbs and soaks into the porous wood substrate, offering moisture and rot protection for an extended time period. It is not dissimilar to hand-cream for dry skin. Apply, let soak in, and whenever the wood begins to look very dry in the future, apply a maintenance coat to nourish and ensure protection.

This attribute cannot be reproduced with modern petroleum-based coatings. Purified Linseed Oil is a plant-based oil created from the flax plant. It has no harmful VOCs, is safe to work with and sustainable for the environment.

An old, textured wood beam is cleaned with Linseed Oil Soap and once dry, rejuvenated with a coat of Purified Linseed Oil.

The beautiful warm color of the wood returns and a level of surface protection is achieved.

Purified Linseed Oil is primarily used alone for reconditioning interior wood surfaces like beams, trim, butcher-block counter tops, etc. or mixed with other traditional coatings like Linseed Oil Paint or Authentic Pine Tar for exterior applications.

The oil by itself does not offer significant UV protection, which is  why it works best in conjunction with other finishes outside.

Teak upkeep on a boat can be daunting but this is an example of the ease of using Purified Linseed Oil. A coat of oil will nourish the substrate, keeping the warmth of the color and offering some surface protection from the elements.

This basic treatment is seasonal. Clean with Linseed Oil Soap, rinse well, let dry fully and apply a thin coat of Purified Linseed Oil.

A conventional linseed oil that has not been “purified” will turn black on such a surface within a very short period of time.
