Painting with Contractor Grade Swedish Linseed Oil Paint on Previously Painted Surfaces

Linseed oil paint has excellent ability to adhere to all surface except oily and very smooth surfaces. If using any organic raw linseed oil as a base coat, make sure this coat is completely absorbed into the grain of the wood before applying the linseed oil paint.

Avoid all tack cloths from a local paint store as it may contain silicone. Dust spray may also contain silicone as well that can compromise adhesion with linseed oil paint.

As an exception, applying linseed oil paint on very thick layers of latex paint can cause linseed oil paint to crackle over time.

If you are unsure about the application process, contact us for advice.

Always begin to prep a surface by cleaning the surface with a PH neutral soap: Light cleaning regular natural dish soap work. Heavy dirt, use the linseed oil soap.

Scrape all old lose paint. If complete paint removal is required, use the Silent Paint Remover to heat and scrape down to the wood grain.

Any exposed wood should be primed with the linseed oil diluted linseed oil paint as a base coat / primer.

Apply 2 top coats of the linseed oil paint after the primer coat or coats.

Linseed oil will dry by absorbing oxygen in the air, it is important to spread the linseed oil paint as much as possible with long strokes with the brush. You should get a coverage that is 10 square meters per 1 Liter of linseed oil paint.

Linseed oil paint is best applied with a natural hogs hair brush. If you only have access to a long haired brush, cut the filaments off by ½”to create a stiffer brush. Long hair brushes will apply to much linseed oil paint. Avoid synthetic bristle paint brushes.

Best condition to apply linseed oil paint is at 64-68 degrees F, slightly cloudy and no wind.

Anticipate 1 ½ to 2 days dry time for the linseed oil paint. Rain, high humidity or large temperature fluctuations will increase dry time.

Avoid applying the linseed oil paint at peak sun hours.

Keep in mind to soak any rags containing linseed oil in water. Add water to a vacuum bag if it has been used to suck any linseed oil soaked paint chips and dirt.

Clean hands and tools with a natural dish soap or linseed oil soap

Never add any additional zinc white to this linseed oil paint.
